The Hotel

This charming hotel lies in the centre of a mountain village. high up on the Italian-Swiss border. It has been restored using enviromentally-friendly materials, with lots of natural wood and light. Most of the rooms have lovely balconies with spectacular views down the valley, said to be one of the most beautiful in the Sud-Tyrol region. The original guest house is 200 years old and has been in the Steiner family since the 1930s. Double rooms, family rooms, suites and single rooms available.

There is an excellent restaurant in the hotel serving creative Tirolean and Italian food with products from their own farm with fruit, herbs, vegetables and potatoes from the garden. A healthy start to each day is guaranteed at breakfast with fresh cows milk, home made yoghurt, eggs, and hams from the farm with homemade jams and honey from their own bees. A la carte menu for lunch if you are having a rest day in the hotel or look forward to returning to a display of home made cakes and breads in the afternoon for tea. But leave space for dinner; a four or five course meal which starts with a salad buffet (fresh from the garden) and ends with a delicious dessert buffet with home made liquors. There is a Vegetarian menu offered daily. Special gala meal on Sunday evenings.

The sociable bar serves a wide range of cocktails, brandies, and super local wines!

The fitness room is well equipped and the lovely indoor pool is free of charge to use. The beauty and wellness area has a wide selection of treatments which are offered on the stunning penthouse floor of the hotel, each treatment room with a wonderful view. The sauna and steam room area is a new wood-and-glass extension which has wonderful relaxing areas looking down the valley.

Riding

Guided trail rides, private lessons, children's pony rides. There are 8 horses available, mostly haflingers but with 2 thoroughbreds and some ponies suitable for the youngest guests, there is something suitable for all riding abilities. There are a huge variety of trails to ride from the hotel in Summer as well as Winter. You can ride for just an hour or two or join a half day ride (4 hours) or join the 6 hour day ride with picnic lunch. The hotel owner, Andreas is a state qualified riding guide.

Complete beginners can take their first steps in the hotel's own outdoor riding school with the qualified instructor who will work you towards your first hack in the glorious countryside, During summer children staying for a week get a free 'taster' session pre bookable at reception and are welcome to help out with feeding on the farm!

Activities

Winter: snow shoe hiking on marked forest and hiking trails, cross-country skiing and ski touring for the adventurous. The magical winter wonderland starts right at the door of the hotel. Toboganning and ice-skating is popular in the village and winter kiting is available nearby.

Downhill skiing: Taufers lies in the middle of the Ortler Ski Arena. There are five snow-guaranteed ski resorts within less than half an hour. 15 family ski resorts with 300km of snow-guaranteed pistes for beginners and intermediate skiier. We recommend Watles (c15 mins) with 18km of ski pistes for families with young kids, Haider Alm (20 mins) day pass just £30, and Schoneben (25mins) with 35km of ski runs. Also Minschuns and Sulden.

Skiing in the Ortler ski arena is best suited to families and up to intermediate level. However there are some black runs and ski touring for more advanced skiers.

The Vinschgau ski card entitles you to use 7 different ski areas on one card, with 35 access points and 140 km of ski runs. Ski hire and ski school available in resorts.

Guide prices: Adults 6 day pass from €155 (Watles only) to €180 (Vinschgau card for up to 7 resorts).

Cross-country skiing and Biathlon: superbly prepared pistes right from the door. Two modern Nordic Centres in the village offering courses and lessons for some hot tips and a hire shop for everything you need.

Skiing for Children: The Ski kindergarten Bubo at Watles with trained child carers and specialist instructors is available Sunday to Friday 10.00 - 15.00h. It has a ‘gold’ award for children’s facilities.

Ski Touring paradise: Lots of different ski tours in one of the largest Winter landscapes up to 3200m; Piz Arunda, Buffalora, Cima Serraglio, Guardas, Muntet, Piz Dora, Piz Terza, Piz Turettas, Tellakopf, all ring bells for friends of this special type of snow fun! We will share with you our favourite tours and book the hotel mountain guide for you. Or if you don't need a guide, the hotel staff will help you plan your route and supply maps and tips. Some tours are suitable for skiers new to the sport.

Snow-shoe hiking: weekly Winter Fitness programme offered in two levels, light and medium pace, for certain weeks in January to March. The package includes 4 guided walks (c.4-5 hours with picnic lunch, all equipment supplied) with a welcome drink, a massage and a hay bath.

In the Summer, biking and hiking are the main pursuits apart from riding. The owner Andreas is a qualified bike guide and riding instructor. A Nordic Walking guide is also based at the hotel. Join the free-of-charge Lamm Active Programme, which includes guided hikes in Summer and snow-shoe trails in Winter. Free hire of Nordic walking sticks and of snow sledges. Wine tours with the owner of the hotel (against charge). If you are renting a car, there are numerous historical ruins, castles and world-class museums in the area plus the fabulous medieval village of Glorens a short journey down the valley.

Mountain bike hire is free ('Hardtails' in 6 different sizes) with GPS programmed with 200 saved bike trails. The hotel is a Bike Point for the South Tyrol Bike School. and has in house professional bike guides . The hotel minibus will collect you from the end of your bike tour which cost around £20 per tour. Bike work shop at the hotel with tour planning desk. Guaranteed bike touring programme from middle of April to beginning of November. Packages available certain weeks only, for 4 or 7 nights. Bike testing centre.

In the Winter, it's all about riding in the snow;there are numerous different winter trails through valley and woods and up into the mountains. Also very popular here is ski touring, snow-shoe walking and of course downhill skiing in the nearby ski resorts. The hotel minibus will take you to the ski lift free of charge. There is a qualified ski teacher, Heini, based at the hotel. Snow-shoes available to hire for just £5.

Kids and families

Free riding taster session (for a stay of 5+ nights) for kids aged 4-12. Trail and Pony riding. Play room for small children, play set with swings and slide etc.., board games and party games for all ages, hanging-out room with play station, table football and darts, free hire of high chairs, cots, changing mats, day packs and buggies. Baby-sitting service. Free Kids' programme for 3-8 year olds in the summer months with activities and DVDs etc...
Farm Discovery walks: Three guided walks to visit the farm and to the alm to see how cheese and honey is made etc.. in Summer and Autumn.

Getting there

The nearest airports are Bozen / Bolzano and Innsbruck. We can arrange competitively priced direct transfers from Innsbruck for you or car hire is available for the drive to the resort which takes just under 2 hours.

By train: from Germany and Austria take the train to Bozen th en change onto the local train to Meran, then take the Vinschger train to Mals where the hotel minibus will meet you. Or take the train to Landeck then the bus to Mals. From Zurich to Taufers take the train to Landquart with the narrow-guage railway to Zernez, over the Ofenpass to Taufers with the Post Bus.
The hotel minibus will pick you up from local bus or train stations.

Internet: the whole hotel is connected with Wifi. Small hourly charge. Free use of computer info points and hotel library.

Weather and Seasons:

Winter: very sunny and dry. Afternoon temperatures between +1.7 in Jan to +8 in March. Snow cover in the valley until middle March. Skiing until start of April. Ski touring until end of April. Cross country skiing (on the higher trails) and snow shoe walking until the beginning April.

Summer: Afternoon temperatures +25, pleasant dry Summer warmth with gentle mountain breezes. Perfect time of year for longer trail rides, high alpine hiking and biking.

Autumn: Afternoon temps +22 in September, +17 in October, +8 in November. Golden Autumn colours with warm sunny days.

Environmental issues

You can calculate the CO2 emission of your journey to Italy at Climate Care and compensate for your 'environmental footprint'. If you let us know how much it is we will be happy to pay this on your behalf.

In the office, we use paper from sustainably managed forests and recycled material where possible.

We encourage you to travel onwards from your arrival airport by rail when possible, and will book seats on your behalf.

Consumer protection

As a member of the Association of Bonded Travel Organisers Trust Limited (ABTOT), an Association approved by the Department of Trade and Industry, this company has provided a Bond to meet the requirements of the Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992. These regulations apply to packages sold in the UK and this Bond provides security for the money paid over by its UK customers and for their repatriation to the UK in the event of this company's insolvency.

How to book

To make a non-binding enquiry or a provisional booking, please fill in the reservations & enquiries form. Once we have checked availability, we will send you a quote with a holiday reference number by email. To secure your holiday, a deposit is required of £200 per person (or half the cost of the holiday, whichever is lower) and forward any insurance premiums to the insurance company. You should book your flights at this stage, and forward details to us so that we can organise your transfers. The balance of payment must be received by us not less than eight weeks before departure.
