Visit the Lipizzaner Stud farm at Piber
See the federal Stud where the Lipizzaners have been bred since 1920, near the historic city of Graz. Piber was formerly a military stud and until 1867 provided horses for the armed forces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The farm now provides all the stallions for the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. About 40 foals are born each year but of these only about five stallions are of the right height and aptitude to be sent to Vienna. These then begin a five-year training programme. The best stallions return to the farm to breed the mares. There are currently six different bloodlines.
On Saturdays you can see a training session of the young stallions in the arena. Guided tours available April to end of October every day except Mondays. Horse carriage rides on Thursdays and Sundays.
Eat a delicious Spanish-Austrian lunch in the elegant castle restaurant Caballero (not included but a table reservation can be made for you). This full day trip is only available from the Dienstl Polo Estate.
